Overview
SQI and VRT SQI reports are specialist engineering reports required where a vehicle has undergone significant repair, modification, or conversion that affects its structural integrity or classification. These reports are prepared by a Suitably Qualified Individual (SQI) approved to assess and certify such work.
They are most commonly requested following structural corrosion repairs identified during NCT testing, or where a vehicle's configuration has changed and must be declared to Revenue for VRT and motor tax purposes.
SQI and VRT SQI Reporting typically include:
- Inspection and certification of major structural repairs following corrosion or damage
- Assessment of repair work to confirm restored structural integrity
- SQI reports requested following NCT advisories or failures related to corrosion
- VRT Declaration of Conversion (VRTCONV) inspections
- Verification of vehicle configuration changes, including:
- Seating alterations
- Vehicle category or classification changes
- Body type conversions (e.g. van to camper, recovery vehicle)
- Chassis or structural modifications
- Engineering confirmation for submission to the RSA or Revenue
All inspections are carried out in accordance with recognised engineering standards and regulatory expectations.
Process & deliverables
- Instruction and Requirement Review - The process begins with instruction from a vehicle owner, operator, or agent. The reason for the SQI or VRT SQI report is confirmed, along with any NCT, RSA, or Revenue requirements.
- Vehicle Inspection - The vehicle is inspected at a suitable location. For structural repairs, the inspection focuses on repaired areas, corrosion treatment, and workmanship. For VRT SQI reports, the inspection focuses on vehicle configuration and declared changes.
- Engineering Assessment - Repairs or modifications are assessed to determine whether they meet acceptable engineering and safety standards and comply with the relevant regulatory framework.
- SQI / VRT SQI Report - A formal report is prepared, typically including:
- Vehicle and inspection details
- Description of repairs or modifications inspected
- Photographic evidence
- Engineering findings and certification where applicable
The report is suitable for submission to the RSA, NCT, or Revenue, depending on the purpose.
Example scenarios
Structural Corrosion Repair Following NCT
A vehicle fails an NCT due to corrosion affecting a structural area. After repair, an SQI inspection is required to confirm that the affected area has been restored to an acceptable standard before the vehicle can return to test.
Vehicle Conversion for VRT Purposes
A vehicle is converted from one classification to another, such as a van to a camper or changes to seating capacity. A VRT SQI inspection is carried out to verify the vehicle's configuration and support submission of a Declaration of Conversion to Revenue.
